Special Feature // Kangaroo Island
We are only a third of the way through 2020, but wow what a year! Firstly, an Australian summer from hell, with the country burning from bushfires. Then the floods came. And then the world stopped due to COVID-19. It may be a while before we can travel internationally again. So, it is the perfect opportunity to support our local tourism.
Tourism Australia has kicked off a With Love From Aus campaign. Telling the world to take time to daydream and we will see you again soon. But as an Australian as soon as it is safe and our state borders open or lockdown is over let’s get out and explore our own shores.
Dreaming of Kangaroo Island, South Australia //
Australia is full of raw natural beauty. And one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited is Kangaroo Island….rugged coastlines, blue waters, white sandy beaches and an abundance of wildlife.
Please keep an eye on Kangaroo Island Tourism for more details on when it is safe to travel. And in the meantime check out how you can support the local producers by shopping online.
Kangaroo Island is only a 45 minutes ferry trip from the mainland, departing at Cape Jervis. You can even take your car across. How are those views!
The Wildlife //
Seal Bay has been home to an Australia seal lion population for thousands of years. They are an endangered species.
Seal Bay is the third largest colony of this magnificent, wild creature. And Kangaroo Island is the only place in the world you can walk on a beach with Australian seal lions.
There were so many cute pups playing on the beach when I visited.
I’ve only ever seen koalas in the wild once, maybe twice. So I was in awe of the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary where koalas roam free. And instead of sleeping, they were moving about, running along the ground and munching on eucalyptus.
A top tip is you need to go early in the morning. Again, I couldn’t choose my favourite. Which one is your favourite?
The other bonus of waking up early on Kangaroo Island, is the other animals are hopping around too!
The Scenery //
The roads are endless, meandering through bushland or along cliff tops, the scenery is all spectacular.
Flinders Chase National Park is located on the east western part of the island. This is where you will find the Remarkable Rocks.
Shaped over some 500 million years of erosion from wind, sea spray and rain. The golden-orange boulders are spectacular…..or should I say remarkable.
Along every path there is a treat at the end, whether it is well trodden….
…..or an obscure unexplored path. There is always a Kangaroo Island scene to delight at the other end.
So when Kangaroo Island is open again for business, back your bags and go explore the unexplored.
